Winter Project

I picked up an '03 999 from a buddy late last year and turned it in to my winter project - I'm pretty happy with the result and thought I'd share.

The originally grey wheels are now powder-coated black - The difference, cosmetically, is night-and-day (thanks to Davef and others on this board who provided info on powder-coating do's and don'ts).

A few hours on eBay and some help from Todd at Cal-Sportbike allowed me to piece together a radial-mount caliper setup. These brakes got pretty good reviews on the '05+ 999S, so I've got high hopes.

The '03-'05 999, inexplicably, came with no provision for swingarm spools, so I had bosses welded on.

Those of you who attended the '06 .org trackdays at Grattan will recall that this bike had a particularly obnoxious exhaust - This has now been remedied with installation of a Termi equal-length setup that I picked up pretty cheap on eBay.

I went to a 520 chain to drop a little weight, and added 2 teeth at the rear - This thing was WAY overgeared in stock trim.

Next up: Some cheap aftermarket race fiberglass. This will drop another few pounds with removal of the headlight, and will keep me from worrying about all that pretty yellow OEM plastic.

Lookin forward to Grattan in June.

Wait until I get there with the D&D double pipe slip-on... adds no power but you'll know I'm behind you...

The Duc looks really nice!!!

Hey, you're more than welcome. I think I'm going to save the old exhaust - It's a sort of monument to what can happen if you have a cutoff wheel, a welder, and too much free time.

You probably made the right decision. I'm having a lot of fun with the Duc, but the bike I really miss is my old 929.
