The thong is persona non grata at Grattan. If seen, it will be seized and burned.

If there is, I don't want to hear about it.

Asked many times over the event weekend if he'll be switching to the new Ducati 1098, Kenny replied "If we were racing full-time that would for sure be our choice, but as a part-time participant and with the fine set-up we have the 999R-05 is plenty of machine for me, and still a proven race winner.

Re: Ducati 1098S

I am also somewhat torn between the 1098 and 1098S. My only plans for the bike are track days and maybe an AHRMA race or two, so as soon as I get mine (if that's what I wind up with) the bodywork and lights would come off and the Sharkskinz go on. I think the S is 12 lbs lighters than the non-s bike and that only equates to 2 hp.

I don't need a data logger, lighter wheels would be nice and if I bought the Non-S I'd put the Ohlins R&T forks and I'd have to get rid of the emissions crap and what about a full exhaust for the thing?

so is it really worth another $5G???

If you're even asking the question you know the answer..

well - I don't really. there are people who know more about the differences between the two bikes than I do and I am looking for their opinions and insight.

Re: Ducati 1098S

My buddy has one and I've heard the termi's and to me, the bike sounds the same as any 996/998 or 999 I've ever heard. The bike itself is a real beauty, the ohlins suspension means nothing to me as I don't ride on the track. My buddy rides just as hard on his 2000 996 with its showa suspension.

He's also already having problems with it. After putting on the termi's and replacing the ECU, the bikes seems to keep dying. Today it died in traffic and took about five minutes until it started again. He also says it's got some power surging going on around 5,000 RPM, neither of which they can seem to fix.

Oh and by the way, if you get the non "s" model, prepare to be snubbed by all the "s" model owners who think they are better than everyone else.

I'm used to that treatment anyway by all the Harley riders around me...

Re: Ducati 1098S

Oldracer, I'm not sure it's a question that anyone can answer for anyone but themselves. Buying a Duc isn't exactly an exercise in rationality or value to begin with. They have this intangible thing that you don't get from the japanese mfgs.

I don't know if the s is worth more or not. I haven't really thought about it real hard. All I know is that I've had a pic of it on my desktop at work for a good 4 months and I never tire of looking at it. I especially like the "carbon" version.

you are very correct. I know, I bought one of the first batch of 916's that came into the country and had the dubious distinction being the first person in the country to crash one - (small crash - low sided in a turn on the street on pebbles). I bought mine from Koups in Harrisburg, Pa. Ferracci and Corser where there the day I went to pick it up. No dealers even had spares, I wound up finding a guy named Howard in Miami who owned Giaccamoto Imports and he got me a new windscreen and a fairing stay from Italy. I ordered the bike just from reading an article in a magazine - I knew I had to have one because it was the coolest thing on two wheels I had ever seen.

If I had a few more bucks laying around and wasn't closing in on retirement and focused (somewhat) on investing most of my money you can be sure my name would be on the list for a Desmosedici RR.

That said, I'm fairly pragmatic when it comes to buying anything. I put together a spreadsheet to compare the non-s and s models to get it in the kind of shape I'd want it in for track riding...which is why I posed the question regarding price difference and options to others who may have performed the same mental exercise.

Of course one spreadsheet that I would never consider putting together is an ROI (return on investment) spreadsheet because no one has been able to put a dollar value on a smile or a dollar value on exhilaration

the 1098S is a good deal.

then again having ducati do the add-on for you would take a lot of the fun of working on the bike out of it for me and I do enjoy working on bikes...

buy alas... I also have my eye on something else, faster, italian and red for about the same $$$.

alas... decisions, decisions
