What's black and white and RED all over?
...bwhip's new race bike.
Although I have loved my Honda 600, I wanted to give myself some more flexibility to race additional classes in the coming year, so I studied up on the rules in our club series at Miller. Found out I could race a 749R against the 600's, and also in a lightweight twins class. Hmmmm... Just as I was looking for a nice 749R on the used bike market, they changed the rules in several clubs around the country, including where I race in Utah, to allow water-cooled twins up to 850cc to compete in HW Twins classes, and in the GTU classes against I-4 600's and the like. Hmmmm.... I briefly thought about the wonderful new Ducati 848, and it would be nice to be able to swap some parts if needed between bikes, but I decided by the time I bought a new one and kitted it properly for racing (bodywork, pipe, PCIII, exhaust, suspension ugrades, steering damper, etc.), I'd be spending almost as much as I did on my 1098S. ![]() Through the process (over the last couple of months), I had found a couple of really nice 749R's, both built to 848's, that had very good racing potential. I had a series of excellent conversations and e-mail exchanges with one of the sellers, who just happened to have put his bike on a few AMA Formula Extreme podiums this past year. That would be Larry Pegram. The actual FX bike he campaigned last year was incredible, but out of the question for me financially. Sure, I'd love all the datalogging, gas-charged Ohlins forks, etc., but it was way more than what I needed or could afford. However, he had a backup bike, an '06 749R, originally prepped to World Supersport specs, with just 20 miles on the clock, which he had for parts, but wound up never using. It had loads of upgrades, including many directly from Ducati Corse. The motor itself has everything his race bike did, all Corse factory stuff (except the race transmission). As you would expect, it makes very impressive numbers. It has brand new bodywork and paint, Ducati Corse reat sets, a Power Commander mapped for pump gas (and a map for race fuel as well), Ohlins front and rear and the forks have been revalved from World Supersport spec in Italy. Reverse shift, a Leo Vince ti pipe, STM slipper, and pretty much everything in the engine you can do (Corse factory flowed heads, etc.), 520 vortex, Cycle Cat clutch cover, Vortex fairing stay, Speigler brake lines, LP windscreen, and a whole bunch more. Sure, it's no Rockwall Honda "A" bike, but it cost a whole bunch less, and I think it will make a pretty nice bike for club racing and track days. Ready for bwhip decals and everything...

![]() So what's the displacement on this one? At least your paint job will be easy on this one, just get some decals ![]() edit: So are we supposed to still have a little #72 stuck on our bikes somewhere? Last edited by evl_twn; 02-08-2008 at 03:37 PM. |

![]() It's an 848, officially. I think we probably should have some #72's on there, for sure! ![]() That's why I always have to buy used bikes. New ones are for guys with money.

So we've now got two ex-Pegram bikes in the .Org family.
That's one sweet-looking bike. I'm always going to have a soft spot for the 749/999 family, especially in race trim. The 749R was supposed to have unique, hot-ticket suspension geometry too - Something about the triple clamp offset and rear shock rocker ratio. Very, very nice. |

I drooled over that bike more than once on his website. Sweet ride. When I come home to Idaho this summer I want to check it out.
