I find it funny that they even try to draw comparisons between the two... the mgp bike is a truely awesome bike, while the Desmo is original in it's own form... can't compare...

Re: Detailed comparo - Desmosedici RR vs MotoGP Bike

First I've read of the effect of exhaust on aerodynamics.... interesting.

Anyone else look at that picture of the engine and wonder where the water jackets were?

Funny, I have an article that claims the exact opposite effect of placing an exhaust in that location. I'll have to try to find it when I get back home to Des Moines.

I didn't look that close at the engine but the exhaust exit seems counterintuitive to me (based on no scientific experiments whatsoever, of course) Wouldn't an exhaust positioned at the top of the rear end like that cover the rider in a nice CO airflow at lower, street speeds based on the turbulence created from his own body?

You and I know from experience riding 1000rrs.... That vaccuum you leave in your wake sucks the exhaust gas back and makes you smell like you were riding a snowmobile.

Of course, my wake is not as impressive as yours.

If you look closely, you can see light bending around it.

When I rode from NY to KY at "slightly above freeway speeds" the back of my jacket was coated with carbon and smelled like, well, exhaust. That would say to me that the exhaust is not only not having that much of an effect, but it's also basically just getting tossed around in the turbulence.

I know they said the pics were not accurate and scientific but can the exhaust really provide that much of a difference in aerodynamic forces? Not the location of the can, but the actual exhaust gases?

Re: Detailed comparo - Desmosedici RR vs MotoGP Bike

This is a very busy webpage but kind of goes into the explanation of why an exhaust shouldn't point upward. I'm not sure it will work as a direct link because I had to register my email to get to this page. You have to skip down a little ways to get to the aero stuff.
