Buell blast input

Looking at buell blasts for my wife and I. Shes new to riding and I have ridden all of my life.

Pros: Light weight, not overpowered, nimble.... Not everyone has one

Cons: Beginner bike may grow tired quick... then need to upgrade

Any good things about them? Bad, other than you may not like them? Any definate problems?

Hit me up, I appreciate any input

What upgrades are available???

Buy it used so someone else takes the first depriciation hit, put frame sliders on it, sell it in a year or two if it's not enough.

If it's enough, do the upgrades.

I rode one during the MSF course and didn't like it. It's a cliche, but the bike SHOOOOOOK. It was the only one in the class and my bud ran over to grab it. I told him he'd want the little 250 I was riding back before the day was over. He lasted about 30mins.

The instructors (Harley guys) kept warning me and bragging about how good the brakes were. They stopped when I purposely locked them up for a 15ft slide and said "not bad."

You have to tell us what you're comparing it to though.

I hate to advertise this b/c I think it's a rip-off, but our local Harley dealer offers an MSF-type course and they use Blasts to teach it. Maybe one near you does as well? Kind of a combined test-ride MSF course. You might even get them to refund the money if you buy one.

Yea Alef's in North Wichita does the MSF courses there and they have an area dedicated for that purpose... They want 250 for the course, the military will reimberse me as well. Plus, from what I hear the savings in insurance alone make it worth it...
My first street bike was a 96 CBR 1000, big and heavy, but fastttt. Then I started reading The Horse BC and got hooked on the backyard chopper thing. The glam of Big Dogs (made here in Wichita) and OCC etc.... just doesn't do it for me. I like the mean blacked out purposeful look of I don't care about shine... Go figure... My Second bike was a 82 GS850 strutted in the rear, sportster seats, bobbed tail, side mount tag and brake light, and drag bars... A friend of mine thought he needed it more than me and bought though...
I guess I like what is not the norm, but being affiliated with the military, I would prefer American...

Get a Kawa 250, suk 500 or Sv 650 / Vstrom she'll learn and keep for a long time.

- Thanks for serving.

- Please don't start the "Harley is made in America" argument again.

- There are plenty of "different" machines out there.

- Repeater's suggestion of the SV-650 for your wife is a great one. It's different, easy to ride, parts and the bike are cheap, and it has a cult following. Put the right pipe on that thing and it almost sounds like an RC-51.

I'm another fan of the SV650. If I already didn't have too many bikes, I'd buy one in a second.

The only problem I had with an SV650 was when it decided to give me a flying lesson...but I guess any bike could do that! I already knew how to do that in a private aircraft...I guess it was jealous.

They are NICE bikes!

I have decided against the blast for myself for now... We already have one reserved at the HD dealership for the wife when they come in... It was to good of a deal to get her riding for me to pass up. Thanks for all of your input.

Good luck with the decision. Be sure to post a follow-up report!
