    BMW F800GS

Somehow this one seems less ugly.

Hey SSG, how long before we get your writeup on this?

    Motorcycle Daily

Torque is generous at 61 lb/ft, and with a six-speed gear box, switchable ABS, 42-degree turning radius, 400-watt alternator, wide foot rests and 4.2-gallon gas tank located under the seat for a low center of gravity, the F 800 GS has all the technology of a touring bike, while still possessing the optimum power-to-weight characteristics of a high-performance enduro. With a dry weight of just 392 lbs, the F 800 GS is lightweight and agile enough for precise handling, making it ideal for screaming around on the twisties or tearing through the dirt.

    Re: BMW F800GS

I would crash that way too fast. The thought of a crossover has always appealed to me but I'm sure I would end up too "steet" on the street or too "dirt" in the dirt and either one would leave me hurting. I don't think splitting the middle would work for me. I'm going to have to keep my dirt bikes in the dirt and my street bikes on the street.

    Re: BMW F800GS

A friends wife is already on the list for one so I should have some impressions early next year.

I think it's pretty repulsive compared to the R1200 version, but I could be odd .
Then again I also am celebrating the fact that we got the 07 (R1200), as the 08 which is uglier then me without makeup.

FWIW, I saw one in the flesh yesterday. Its going to take some serious skid plates/crash bars to make this bike off road worthy. Everything from the front of the motor (where the oil filter is) to the sides of the radiator are really exposed. BMW is going to make a mint selling replacement radiators, header pipes, and clutch covers.

I thought the samething and even practiced if for while. Now that I have an 08 GS and no dirtbike I can say, I don't miss the dirtbike. The dirtbike pretty much sat anyways. It is awesome to be tooling along out here in the high Des and just go, "what is up and over that mountain?" and you go. Grant it, you can't or actually shouldn't do a lot of things on these you did with your straight on dirt bike but, the GS is a very capable machine and with a good rider can do just about anything a dirtbike can do.

Just the other day, the GF and I made about 4 transitions in one day, dirt to street, street to dirt. Truly and adventure being on these bikes.

Funny, I wrote that bit that you quoted about exactly one year ago. Now I have a SuMo sitting in the garage for the exact purpose of being a bike that can go street to dirt and everything in between. I was just seeing too many dirt roads in the area that I wanted to explore. A SuMo isn't exactly a GS but it's a step in the right direction...right? I'm even going with Avon Distanzias so that I can get a little better off-road capability without losing too much on the street.

Sweet. Now I have a reason to not buy one. Wow that was close. Saved by faulty German engineering.
