It needs that kind of horsepower to move all that mass and get away from all the ugly.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government.

We'll see when the real tests start rolling in. I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see this thing make class-leading power numbers. BMW has been working on the powerplant for quite a while. They are keenly aware of the challenges involved in going head-to-head with the Japanese bikemakers, and I'd wager they had advertisable power very high on their development priority list.

Initial performance reviews are extremely positive, for performance, technology, and value. I guess I'd take one in track livery, but that bizarre headlight combo just looks freaky to me.

BMW's F1 engine made a LOT more HP than the Honda or the Toyota.

I read that California Superbike School has ditched Kawasaki for these (link to BMW press release)

    To summarize:
… Thanks to a partnership between BMW Motorrad USA and the California Superbike School, riders will have the opportunity to unleash the power of the most potent, sophisticated and lightest sportbike ever produced....

Recognized as the foremost motorcycle school in the world, the California Superbike School began in 1980 with the goal of becoming the most comprehensive professional school for the motorcycle enthusiast. .....

Don't know what the numbers are supposed to but will tell you this. The guy riding one a willow this past summer was dusting everyone on liter bikes around the streets.

BMW had one out here and was demo'ing it at a local track day. NO, no one else was allowed to ride it. Tried to talk him into holding the keys to my R1200GS which cost 7k more. No Joy.

In the February issue of Bike, they strapped one to a dyno and were astounded at the results: 183.7 bhp.

    Wow.

Here's how all of the literbikes they've tested stack up:

    S1000RR 183.7
    ZX-10R 165.3
    CBR1000RR 164.5
    GSX-R1000 160.1
    R1 156.3
    1198S 154.9
    RSV4 152.9

They also did a road and track test, directly comparing the new BMW to their current king of the literbikes, the CBR1000RR.

Their verdict: A new king. Especially with all of the optional electronics. They basically say it's mind-numbingly powerful and incredibly brilliant.

In March they are going to do a full comparo with ZX-10R, RSV4R, BMWS1000RR, GSX-R1000, Fireblade, and R1.

That's just unreal. I can't help but think of all you went through to see 180hp at the rear wheel.
...dude you ride an offroad bike with slicks, 1/2 the weight of a GS, double the suspension, with a browning 50 cal going off 32" from your skull as a daily freaking driver - I'd expect anything except a nitro dragbike to be bland by comparison - SSG

A true superbike that you can buy for less than a small car.

With 183 at the wheel it is 2hp away from the limit in Canadian Superbike, and would be illegal in a lot of open sportbike classes at the club level. Imagine having to restrict your engine to comply with the rules? Wow.

    Craziness.

That bike is just a bad MF'er, no other way to call it.

The game has been changed. Nicely done BMW.

Big time. The baddest sportbike on the planet has TC and ABS...it's going to change some minds...

I'll wager this bike will have fully electronic suspension at it's next revision...

Tweakable modules will invade the trackday scene in the same way that PowerCommanders did during the naughties...

I'll take some of that action.

It's an intriguing bike, with phenomenal capabilities and incredible value. If my plan was to invest in a bike on which I could hotly contest the Open Superbike or similar class, maybe - but that's just not my current mindset.

The CBR I've got is a pretty darn amazing bike, and relatively cheap! I'm loving it for occasional races in Formula 40, etc. and trackdays. It also could be lots of fun to watch a very good pal of mine race it in various classes for which it's eligible.

For my podium and championship aspirations, however, I'm currently inclined toward a couple of our twins classes. I'm 92% complete with the process of building my primary race bike for 2010, which should be quite competitive in Twins GTO and Super Twins.

But, you know me - it's only January. Who knows what could happen by April?

If he does, he better let me take it out on the 29th of June! Those things are sounding pretty impressive. If they'd been out when I bought my Honda...

The Roadracing World write up says its a beast! Sounds like its overall package will re-define the 1000cc class. Looking forward when they test all the liter class bikes! Now if they would only down-size that to 400cc, because of the economy...

Yeah a local guy here "has his" too, the deal was basically sure we'll sell you the first one - we just have to floor it till March or something. So I am guessing they'll be available for purchase sometime around then, for those with their money down in 2009. For the late guys, probably May - just my guesses.

But he got a picture of himself on it at least
