Who knew you needed a pinky?
I was practicing for the next round of Fasttrax races at Nelson yesterday. I'm not sure why yet, but I went down in T12. Low sided and the clip on smashed my left pinky. I knew that I broke it immediately, but hung out to help the corner workers w/ the bike. We didn't see a window to get the bike up due to traffic on the track so I went to medical to get my finger checked out. Took my glove off on the walk over only to discover that my pinky looked like in had been smashed in a stamp/press and that the bone was sticking through the skin!!!
I thought "Um yea, let's get this looked at." lol Anyway, some morphine, demerol, a very sweet nurse, a good ortho doc and two stiches later my finger is back mostly as it should be. Real sore. Typing is hard and the gash is gnarly. Vicodin is good though! I missed the races today, but went out to help my friend. Bike needs the mounting tabs for the rearset welded which I think my dad can do. Other that that it came out okay. I got off very lucky. I easily could've lost my finger. Oh well, got a good story out of it at least. Bummer that I missed the races today though. |

All that because you wanted to meet the hot nurse?

You had a chance at being the next Troy Bayliss and you completely blew it. Next time, tear that danglin' bastard off. Weight reduction.

Glad to hear you didn't have anything worse, though I am sure the pinky will be painful enough.

Re: Who knew you needed a pinky?
You really don't need that pinky now do you?
Sorry to hear about the crash, but as long as you could drive home, it's a good thing

Re: Who knew you needed a pinky?
It really doesn't hurt that bad, but I'll admit that typing is a little harder. I'll try going through today w/o the vicodin. it doesn't do much for me anyway to be honest.
As for the crash: I'm not positive why, but I know that I locked up the front which immediately threw me down. I was entering the fast T12; a left hander at the end of th back straight. I wasn't going all that fast as I had to crawl through the kink behind a slow guy. I'd just gone around him and was setting up for 12, I got on the brakes and had plenty of lever, but remember thinking that the bike just didn't seem to be slowing. I felt that if I could slow just a bit more that I could make the turn so I opted to run a bit wide, slow some more and make the turn. I was still straight up right when I reached for more lever and I was thrown down immediately. Never had time for an "oh shit" moment. I barrel roled but never tumbled. Never hit my head. Immediately I figured that I'd broken my finger and told the corner worker as much. I'd of had my friend drive me to the hospital had it not been for the bone sticking out of my skin. It was pretty gorry, but never hurt bad. Even now it only hurts if I bump it or try to move it. I'm going to change brake pads and bleed new fluid into it. Dad's going to try to weld the rearset mounting tabs. Next month is the last race, so I'll go out and not push anything, collect as many points as I can and end the season on two wheels. Whoever said that I must be tough: When I was in the hospital the ortho doc came in and was checking it out and I said "Uh, dude. You don't want to set that w/ me sober." "Why?" "Cause I'm scared." lol ![]() That's when I got the demerol...which didn't do much for me either. By the time my wife got to the hospital I was plenty sober to drive. Evn had a beer when I got back to the track. Anyway, crashing sucks but this one could've been much much worse. I just wish I knew why the front locked up. I mean, it's not like the back started to lift or anything. I'm wondering if I had too many heat cycles on it, combined w/ maybe some moisture or sealer on the track. I just can't figure it out. I had no warning. I grabbed more lever and the next thing I knew I was on my way over the left clip on, then "SMASH", roll, slide. Wave to the corner worker. |

Did you notice any gravel on the track? Glad you're mostly ok. Now quit breaking rule #1.

Re: Who knew you needed a pinky?
Nope nothing. There are a lot of patches (kind of goes w/o saying at Nelson though ha ha) in that area. As for rule #1, the wife as usual has been very understanding.

Re: Who knew you needed a pinky?
Sorry to hear about the crash but as we pilots (and former pilots) say, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.
Guess you'll have to switch your pinky ring to the other hand.

I'm wearing the Held Phantoms and they did really well. I need to have them fixed, and not glove would've prevented this injury. Maybe the A*'s that have the pinky and ring fingers sewn together. It's feeling better today even. Typing isn't too bad. Gash seems to be closing up. Still sore though. Just got back from having the frame tabs built back up w/ weld. i need to drill and tap them. the rear stand spool is effed up as well. It'll need filled w/ weld and re-tapped as well. |

On the positive side, now you can trade war stories with Bayliss. |

That'd be pretty sweet if I weren't slower than molasses in January.
I'm actually very lucky that I didn't lose my finger. |

Re: Who knew you needed a pinky?
Ouch!
Sorry to hear of the mishap, but glad you're healing up and that it wasn't any worse. I know that feeling of the bike instantly doing what it's not supposed to - not good.
