Prov Nov Syndrome

I got torpedoed by some CMRA provisional novice yesterday at Hallett during the second lap of the HW SS race. I'm just slightly banged up, but my bike sustained substantial crash damage. What pisses me off the most is it was my first race out of five for the day. Now I've got serious repairs ahead, the full extent of which has yet to be discoverd. Grattan attendance may be tentative at this point depending on the repair list.

These guys need to be gridded in the second wave or at least towards the back of the pack.

After the crash I stayed around to watch my friend finish his races and to give the prov nov a chance to man up, but got nothin. Several fellow racers came by to check on me which was greatly appreciated. The guy following me before the crash came by to give a full report since he had front row seat. In fact I didn't even know it was a yellow shirt that crashed me out until he told me. I went looking for the prov nov once then decided better of it. It's hard to be a good sport sometimes, but I try. It's too bad the lesson lost here is that they guy who crashed me out was able to finish his day and never even offered an apology.

Wow that sucks. If I started racing I would WANT to be on the back for preservation of all involved (me included)

Glad you are OK and sorry about the bike.

Glad you made it out OK. Sorry to hear about the bike. You are a better man than I am... If you show at Grattan you can ride mine all you want.

Re: Prov Nov Syndrome

Major bummer. That's what I always worry about most when racing - some overexuberant tool taking me out. No class of the guy not to find you to apologize. He must be of the Aaron Yates "That's just part of racing" school. I sure hope you can still get to Grattan.

Having started dead last more than once, trust me, starting at the back, and then having to pass all those guys, has nothing to do with preservation or "safety"...being up with the faster guys usually means being up with the guys that have a better idea about what in the hell they are doing.

Re: Prov Nov Syndrome

Sorry to hear about this

I can sympathize as exactly the same thing happened to me during a GTO at Grattan in the second lap. I was coming down the hill and went wide to the right to pass 2 other riders over the hump and was all the way at the grass and when I started to turn in for the right hand turn 5, some first race mental giant on a GSXR 1100 decided he was going to "go through" me into 5. he slammed my knee so hard, it dented the frame on my VFR (and shattered my patella in the process).

I never caught up to him after the race, but three of our team did and convinced him it would be a good idea to apologize . . .

A provisional novice is a "racer in training". They have taken a written test on flags and general racing rules and completed a 1 day track school. From that point they can enter races, but must participate in corner working and complete 2 race events with no crashes before earning a license. During that time they wear yellow shirts over their leathers so other racers can easily ID them and extend a little extra courtesy when passing. I went through the CMRA school in 2002 and safety was always at the top of the list among all topics. Since then the CMRA has farmed out the training to LSTD. I don't know if or how the curriculum has changed, but I can tell you the fucktard that hit me definitely didn't get it.

I've still got this guys frame slider from the right side of his bike. He rammed me so hard it tore it off with part of threads still attached. My left knee is about twice the size of my right. I was going to give it back to him in the form of a fist pack, but as I was walking the pits to find him my knee started to get really big, the adrenaline started to wear off, and my "sportsmanship" started to kick in.

If it's any consolation, I'm sure the guy will go on to MotoGP.

Re: Prov Nov Syndrome

sorry to hear. I guess a simply apology is just too much to ask.
you shoulda found him just to see what kind of vehicle he's in then run him off the road after he leaves the track.

Re: Prov Nov Syndrome

Man, I am so sorry to hear that. Hope your knee and bike are fixable, and I commend you on your sense of sportsmanship. In my case, If I was feeling chivalrous, I would have just taken a smaller wrench with which to knock some sense into the guy.

What does the bike need?

Tail, subframe, exhaust, and rear rim crushed (literally). Fuel tank is dented and mounting points bent, but I think I can save it. The swing arm looks tweaked too. When I was unbolting the remains of the rear end from the frame the bolts were coming out wobbly and bent. I already called my frame guy in Topeka to schedule the delivery of my roller to get checked out. He still has my spare rear rim and does great work, but moves pretty slow. Left clip-on bent at ~90 degree and upper faring broken pretty good.

I have spare tail, clip-on, rim, and exhaust so here's the list of parts or services outstanding:
1. subframe and tray
2. upper
3. repair/replace swingarm
4. repair frame

The front seems to be fine, but I'll wait to see once it gets on the frame machine. In any case I have spare front rim and forks.
