How do I...

become a racer. I have done Schwantz School a bunch of times so I qualify for my license, but what it the next step? How do I actually go about getting my license? What is the most cost effective series to race in? The most competitive? The safest...etc.

I watch the AMA, MotoGP, and FIM races in my garage seating on my bike. Pretty safe that way.

The way things are going in here lately, pretty soon we're all going to have to be racers to be allowed a membership. Damned racer types...

Question...since I did Schwantz do I actually have what I need for a license? Is it just paperwork at this point?

Check the WERA rulebook. It lists Schwantz as an approved school. One difference between them and the Ed Bargy class from my perspective is KSSS spent about zero time on race procedure. One class session at Bargy is on flags and grids and stuff. Also there is a mock race so you can do a start and grid with boards etc. Personally I found the setup intimidating and think that would be super helpful (or a race buddy to help you that first time).

That said everything I remember at Bargy except grid posting is very well covered in the WERA rulebook.

Not sure on any other group as WERA seems to be the best choice for my area.

I am not sure what you mean by race procedure...do you mean flags and things of that nature or how to come out of a corner faster? Also I dont have to have a stuffed sheep as a passenger to qualify do I?

He's talking about number boards, flags and such. All the procedural stuff.

Ed Bargy takes the time to cover how a race goes from leaving the pits to the final checkered flag. And at the end of the class day, there's a mock race.

And a stuffed sheep as a passenger will probably get you banned. Not just from the race but from here too. Only room for one kook in the joint at a time.

Here is a school that can get you licensed, and up to speed with racetrack protocol: Penguin Racing School Basic Roadracing Course Review.

Find out what orginization races in your area and what their requirements are.

Have fun!

Thanks, but if I have my Schwantz School certificate do I have to go to another school? What do I have to do to get my license? Run a novice race without falling? Fill out paperwork and pay a fee?

Probably decide which org you want to race with (WERA, CCS, etc.), and check their website and contact them to see what they require....

Sorry the anthrax flaired last night. Yes what Seamus said. Fast enough is great but there is also a huge what do I now factor that will make you overly nervous. My opinion is that the EB class would help that some, and a racing buddy that has gone would be even better.

Well thats one of the things that I am asking...which organization would you guys reccomend? What are the benefits or downfalls of each? Is there a seperate license for each organization or is the licensing its own entity?

Never really had a problem with that...what is the curriculum of the Ed Bargy school?

Once you decide wich org you are going to race with, get your hands on a rule book. Most of the questions you have can be answered by reading the rules. And it will help with your confidence once you are aware how they run the races, how the race classes are defined, etc.

I think which org is better answered by location. Find tracks that you would be willing to travel to then find out who runs there by looking at the tracks schedule. Then when you have the list get the rule book and see if the class structure and rules fit you and your bike (for instance it used to be that there was no Novice class for 1000cc inline 4's in WERA if my memory is correct) That should shorten your list considerably.

+1, or better yet, get the rule book first. Some organizations allow you to download them from the web.

Licensing is per organization, but many will wave some things (like practice races) if you have a license elsewhere. All organizations have their little differences, and even with in organizations different localities run a little different depending on the people running the show at the race.

Check calendars for your area, decide which ones race the tracks and the dates you would like to do, then check them out in more detail. You might find there is only 1 or two options after you narrow your search. Give them a call and talk for a few minutes.

Good luck in your search.

Around me I think an obvious choice would be CCS. They seem to be running at all the tracks that are near me. If I was out in Idaho still, or again, I'd probably look at whatever is running regularly at Miller (I'd call bwhip).
